Grandparents serve as the main branch of the family tree in genetics also since you are made up from the combination of all 4 of your grandparent’s DNA. A single grandparent shares an average of 25% of the DNA with a grandchild. Although there are chances that it is not exactly 25% due to recombination and shuffling of DNA.
Your parents share 50% of DNA from their parents but the DNA sequence gets shuffled at every generation. Which usually occurs regardless of gender. A grandparent DNA test is generally used to determine the genetic relationship between a possible grandchild and a grandparent.
Grandparent DNA testing is even more helpful to prove the relation when the alleged father or parent is not present or is refusing to take a DNA test. Since these tests are generally accurate they can easily determine the relation t=and to make it more reliable the child’s mother DNA can also be used.
- What is the DNA testing method?
The DNA test is usually done by taking the sample from the buccal cavity using a cotton swab. The cotton swab is softly rubbed on the inside of the cheek and the sample is then stored carefully to avoid contamination.
A blood sample can also be used for DNA testing.
It can be done in a legal and non-legal way (At home)
Legal can be used to prove the relation in court but the non-legal way is not accepted in court and is only used for personal use or to improve emotional bondage between grandparent and possible grandchild.
